Port of Halifax port-wide emissions inventory

Port of Halifax

Viterstream assisted the Halifax Port Authority (HPA) develop a port-wide emissions inventory of energy consumption, GHGs and criteria air contaminants, for the activities of the HPA, its tenants, the terminals of the port and the port service providers. The emissions inventory serves the internal environmental initiatives of the HPA and is recognized by external programs such as the Green Marine environmental certification program.

Viterstream developed an Excel-based data submission form for the HPA and members of the port-wide inventory to use, representing the equipment fleets and related energy consumption for the source groups Administration, Cargo Handling Equipment, Onroad Vehicles, Rail and Harbourcraft. Ocean-going vessel activities while in HPA jurisdictional waters were characterized through leveraging the Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) Canadian Marine Emissions Inventory Tool (MEIT).

The inventory is built with the Port Emissions Inventory Tool (PEIT), a database model that was originally built by a team including Viterstream staff and is now maintained and updated by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC).

Viterstream’s scope of work included:

– develop a project plan for completion of the inventory;

– assist the HPA with engagement to collect the necessary activity data;

– develop the inventory through application of the approved methods in the project plan;

– complete quality assurance steps to validate the inventory;

– complete analysis of the inventory for trends from previous initiatives and opportunities for emissions reduction;

– completion of a project report identifying all methods, assumptions and outcomes of the project.
